I regularly receive Acrobat 3 PDF's (version 1.2).  I need to convert these to a later version that can handle things like 128 bit encryption.  Is there anyway I can read up these older PDF's and write them back as a later version?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob!

Curious problem ;-)
A pdf-document is only the product of a pdf-application.
Normally all pdf-applications are compatible with older
pdf-specs to handle older pdf-documents.
If you have an old pdf-application (perhaps which can only
work with 40-bit-documents) then you should update it to
a newer version.
If you have a very old pdf-document then it could be read,
maintained and modified by any pdf-application. A pdf-
application which supports (for example) pdf-specs 1.6
supports the older specs (like 1.2), too.
QuickPDF can change your old pdf-documents to 128-bit or
256-bit-encryption and many security-options (no print, no
comments, ...) can be set but why?

Cheers and welcome here,
Ingo

My example wasn't the best.  Still, I want these older PDF's to be later versions.  Can QuickPDF re-save documents as a different version?

Ah, figured it out.  If I use the Encrypt method, and set it to 128 bit encryption, but with no passwords, it converts the documents to 1.6.   Setting it to 256 bumps it up to 1.7.

Perfect!

But this changes the document only less and gives you no advantage.
The only thing which will happen is that users with older pdf-readers
could have problems reading your pdf with the higher encryption ;-)

Cheers, Ingo
