Saving/ render to string and loading as string.

What is diff between render and save as string? 

If I render I cant load the saved string. But the result from save as does reload.

What I would like to do is save various standard pdfs as strings and store them in a DB. 

If I try and update a table (ms access / mssql) with the result of save as string I get an error. If I do the same with the result from render it updates.

Any sugestions please?
