RenderDocumentToFile Results in GIGANTIC WMF File

I'm using RenderDocumentToFile to get a WMF format image from a PDF (72 DPI). The PDF is about 1 meg in size but the WMF output is over 80 megs! 

I confess that I don't know much about the WMF format except that it is designed to hold both vector and raster data but I'm a little confused as to why a PDF that renders to a 1.4 meg BMP could be 80 times that big in the WMF format.

Can anyone clue me in? Thanks!

* I should also mention that Corel Paint Shop Pro opens the PDF and saves it in a WMF file with a size of about 1.3 megs..
