Slow rendering and printing of scanned documents

   We have some PDFs that are scanned documents.   Some take a long to render and print.  Some take a long time to print only (rendering is fast).  The print spooler shows the size of each page to be 70 MB+.  Neither Acrobat nor Foxit have any problems rendering or printing these documents (under 1 MB per page in print spooler).
Not all of our scanned documents are like this though. Is there anything we can to do to the PDFs to improve the printing?

FYI: The scanned documents are usually 300 dpi monochrome images.
